Americana

The Americana is a charming and productive chicken known for its fluffy muffs and beard, pea comb, and beautiful blue eggs. This appealing dual-purpose bird combines hardiness, a friendly temperament, and unique egg color—making it a popular choice for backyard flocks and families looking for colorful, personable layers.

  • Purpose: Dual-purpose (eggs & meat)

  • Egg Color: Blue to blue-green

  • Egg Size: Medium

  • Production: 150–200 eggs per year

  • Mature Weight:

    • Hens: 5.5–6.5 lbs

    • Roosters: 6–7 lbs

  • Temperament: Curious, docile, friendly

  • Hardiness: Excellent cold and heat tolerance

Americana hens typically begin laying around 20–24 weeks of age. They are steady producers of those sought-after blue eggs and continue laying well even in cooler months with proper care and lighting.

Like other blue-egg layers, they feature a small pea comb and clean legs, which help minimize frostbite risk in colder climates. Their muffs and beards add extra insulation while giving them a distinctive, adorable appearance.

Americanas come in a range of colors, with slate or black legs and expressive faces framed by full muffs and beards. They are active foragers that thrive in free-range or semi-confined setups, bringing personality and color to any flock. Slight variations in egg shade (from sky blue to greenish) can occur depending on the individual bird and genetics.
