Buff Orpington

The Buff Orpington is a beloved heritage breed known for its gentle temperament, beautiful golden plumage, and dependable dual-purpose qualities. Developed in the late 1800s in Orpington by poultry breeder William Cook, this breed quickly gained popularity for its productivity and calm disposition.

  • Purpose: Dual-purpose (eggs & meat)

  • Egg Color: Light brown

  • Egg Size: Large

  • Production: 200–280 eggs per year

  • Mature Weight:

    • Hens: 7–8 lbs

    • Roosters: 8–10 lbs

  • Temperament: Extremely gentle, friendly, docile

  • Hardiness: Excellent cold tolerance

Buff Orpington hens typically begin laying around 18–22 weeks of age and produce a consistent supply of large, light brown eggs. While not as high-volume as hybrid layers, they are dependable producers and valued for long-term flock sustainability.

With their full, fluffy feathering and broad bodies, Buff Orpingtons are particularly well-suited to colder climates. Their soft golden-buff color adds warmth and beauty to any flock, making them a favorite among backyard keepers.

Buff Orpingtons are famous for their sweet, calm personalities. They are often described as “lap chickens” due to their friendly nature and tolerance for handling. Hens are known to go broody and make attentive mothers, making them an excellent choice for those interested in hatching chicks naturally.
