Striking, Glossy Appearance

Black Standard Cochins are covered in rich, beetle-green sheen black feathers that shimmer in sunlight. Their broad bodies, full feathered legs and feet, and rounded shape give them a soft, almost “fluffy ball” appearance. Their size and presence make them a standout in exhibition pens and breeding programs alike.

Gentle Giants

Despite their impressive size, Black Cochins are famously sweet and laid-back. They are one of the most family-friendly large breeds, often tolerating handling well and adapting easily to backyard environments. Their calm temperament also makes them a strong choice for youth poultry projects.

Outstanding Broody Hens

Cochins are well known for their strong broody instincts. Black Cochin hens frequently go broody and are dependable mothers, capable of hatching and raising not only their own chicks but other breeds as well.

Management Notes

Their heavy feathering provides excellent insulation in cold climates, but they require dry, well-ventilated housing to maintain feather condition. Due to feathered feet, muddy or wet environments should be minimized. In hot weather, provide shade and airflow, as their dense plumage can make them less heat-tolerant.
