Black Copper Marans

The Black Copper Marans is one of the most admired heritage chicken breeds, famous for producing some of the darkest chocolate-brown eggs in the poultry world. Originating in France, this hardy and productive breed is valued by both backyard keepers and serious breeders for its beautiful plumage, calm temperament, and exceptional egg color.

Famous Dark Chocolate Eggs

Black Copper Marans are best known for their rich, dark brown eggs, often described as “chocolate colored.” These eggs are highly prized in specialty egg markets and backyard flocks because of their unique color and beautiful appearance in mixed egg baskets. Hens typically begin laying around 22–26 weeks of age and produce consistent eggs when provided proper nutrition and good flock management.

Rich Feather Coloring

This variety features glossy black plumage with brilliant copper feathers around the neck and hackles. Roosters display especially vibrant copper coloring that contrasts dramatically with their deep black bodies. Their feathered legs and strong build give them a classic, rustic farm appearance that reflects their French heritage.

Calm and Manageable Temperament

Black Copper Marans are generally calm, steady birds that integrate well into mixed flocks. They are known for being relatively docile and easy to manage, making them suitable for both beginner chicken keepers and experienced breeders. While not overly aggressive, roosters tend to be protective of their flock.

Management Notes

Black Copper Marans perform well in both free-range and run-based systems. They enjoy foraging and can help supplement their diet when given space to roam. Because their egg color is a key trait, selective breeding is often practiced to maintain deep shell pigmentation. Provide clean nesting boxes to preserve the natural bloom that enhances the dark appearance of their eggs. Their feathered legs should be monitored in muddy conditions to keep them clean and healthy.
