Rhode Island Red

The Rhode Island Red is one of America’s most dependable and versatile chicken breeds. Developed in the late 1800s in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, this hardy, dual-purpose breed is prized for both its rich brown eggs and excellent meat quality.

  • Purpose: Dual-purpose (eggs & meat)

  • Egg Color: Rich brown

  • Egg Size: Large

  • Production: 250–300+ eggs per year

  • Mature Weight:

    • Hens: 6–7 lbs

    • Roosters: 8–9 lbs

  • Temperament: Confident, hardy, productive

  • Hardiness: Excellent in both hot and cold climates

Rhode Island Reds are celebrated for their steady, consistent laying. Hens typically begin producing around 18–20 weeks of age and continue laying well through various seasons. Their rich brown eggs are a favorite for backyard baskets.

Known for their deep mahogany-red plumage, Rhode Island Reds are strong, rugged birds that handle a wide range of climates. Their durability and resilience make them an excellent choice for beginners and experienced poultry keepers alike.

Rhode Island Reds are active and alert, making them good foragers in free-range settings. While generally friendly, they can be assertive within a flock. They are not typically broody, which helps maintain consistent egg production throughout the year.
